In collaboration with Jon Chilingerian, Professor at Brandeis University and key academic partner in the Hanley Center’s Physician Executive Leadership Institute Advanced Course, the Hanley Center is offering a three-day seminar series that explores innovation-based strategies as a source of competitive advantage in an industry with strict regulation and limited financial resources. Innovation is a vast subject that requires strategic thinking, reflective practice, experimentation, parallel organization, and organizational learning. We examine how to design and build organizations and teams that excel at innovation.
Participants will analyze the principles of leadership that they can apply both within and outside of established organizations, as well as develop an appreciation of the complex issues related to founding, launching, and financing new service ideas, process improvements, and entrepreneurial ventures.
Planned Series Includes:
The Courage to Listen. Keynote Address by Rev. Jeffrey Brown. Rev. Brown is the man behind the “Boston Miracle,” the dramatic drop in youth homicide rate from 76 to zero in the 1990s. A dynamic and inspirational speaker, Rev Brown shares the thinking and out-of-the-box strategies behind this ‘miracle’ that transformed the culture in youth gangs in Boston. We will hear how he accomplished his goals and how he brought innovative thinking and action to this challenge in this inspirational session.
Developing a Strategic Service Vision, Design Thinking & Leading Innovative and Transformative Culture Change in Complex Health Care Organizations. Every organization needs to change quickly as its customer needs, work processes and technology changes. To keep from falling behind leaders should focus attention on process innovation. Through case studies and a computer-based simulation, we will focus on ideas for a strategic service vision: targeted market segments, well-defined service concepts, focused operating strategy and an effective delivery system. We will also talk about the elements of design thinking and prototyping ideas as well as exploring how leadership behavior can influence health system performance across a region. Professor Chilingerian, lead faculty in the PELI Advanced Course and ranked as one of the top 20 teachers of health management in the world, will lead this seminar. He has lectured across the globe including, Armenia, Belgium, Brazil, China, Denmark, England, Netherlands, Singapore, South Africa, and Spain. He is founding director of the MD-MBA Program in Health Management with Tufts Medical School (1995-present), which today is the largest MD-MBA program in the United States with over 200 graduates.
Stakeholder Alignment and Innovation Systems: Professor Joel Cutcher-Gershenfeld leads research on agile institutions and teaches classes on strategy and operations at the Heller School for Social Policy and Management at Brandeis University. An award-winning author of books and journal articles on high performance work systems, transformation in labor-management relations, negotiations and conflict resolution, economic development, and engineering systems, Professor Gershenfeld shares concepts and tools to build capacity in multi-stakeholder collaboration and stakeholder engagement and advanced methods, visualizations, and analytics for continuous stakeholder alignment. He will also dive deeply into concepts of innovation systems including education and approaches used by serial innovators, the challenges of uncertainty and power dynamics associated with innovation in organizations, using innovation in a market context, and anticipating future innovation in the context of platform multipliers. Professor Gershenfeld uses simulations, case studies, and other engaging teaching methodologies to bring these concepts to life.
Entrepreneurial Leadership and Innovation: Entrepreneurial leaders are not only those with innate talents—these skills can be learned! Professor Carole Carlson shares key concepts in entrepreneurship and business models that foster new business and service line development. Using a case study approach, Professor Carlson introduces the class to frameworks, techniques, and business models to build health leaders’ capacity to develop and test new ideas. At Brandeis, Professor Carlson teaches courses in Strategic Management, Social Entrepreneurship, and Team Consulting. She is the Concentration Chair for the Social Entrepreneurship and Impact Management concentration in the Heller MBA program. She was the 2013 recipient of the Heller Teaching Award and a 2014 recipient of the Davis Teaching and Learning Fellowship. She has a significant business consulting and coaching practice and works with the Harvard Business school in delivering online and in-person courses with business executives. She also advises the Christensen Center for Teaching and Learning at the Harvard Business School on teaching effectiveness.
Each learning sessions will enable participants to analyze principles of strategic thinking to innovative ideas in healthcare management; analyze how to move innovative ideas from concept to implementation; and develop skills for leading change.
COST: $1600 for the SERIES with payment due by July 15, 2018.
To enable a true cohort experience, enrollment must be for the full seminar series. Thus, enrollment in individual sessions is not an option.
